HIKER TRASH ZERO DAY “HIKE TREK CREW” (HT30002) | Merino Wool Trail Socks Refined through a 5,000 km Field Test
Japanese-made trail socks developed for the comfort and durability required on long-distance journeys.
The HIKER TRASH ZERO DAY “HIKE TREK CREW” combines the long-distance hiking experience of Ryosuke “SKETCH” Kawato with ROTOTO’s sock-making expertise.
In 2017, a prototype was field-tested while Kawato hiked approximately 5,000 km along the Continental Divide Trail in the United States. Damaged areas were reported to the development team in Japan, refined versions were sent back to the trail, and this process was repeated to create a sock with the practical toughness required by long-distance hikers.
The fabric is made with 79% machine-washable, shrink-resistant merino wool. Its moisture-managing, insulating, antibacterial, and odor-resistant properties are combined with nylon and polyester for improved abrasion resistance.
A pile-knit sole provides cushioning, fabric thickness, and flexible stretch. Special stretch yarns create a natural fit, while the three-dimensional heel construction helps reduce unwanted movement. Integrated arch support adds stability during extended periods of walking.
In abrasion testing, the toe and heel reached approximately 3,300 cycles, while the sole reached approximately 2,800 cycles. The socks are designed for long-distance hiking and trekking, as well as bikepacking and cycling trips that combine riding and walking.
The crew-length design pairs well with hiking boots. A carabiner hole is built into the cuff, inspired by long-distance hikers who cut holes in wet socks to hang them from backpacks or tents for drying.
